In addition, the MFA Foundation administers special scholarship programs and has also made substantial contributions to the University of Missouri College of Agricultue, Food and Natural Resources. The MFA Foundation is incorporated under the laws of the State of Missouri. Officers and directors are officers and employees of MFA agencies and serve without compensation from the Foundation. The scholarships are $2,000 each and to pursue any course of study that leads toward an academic degree such as a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Associate’s Degree at an accredited college or university. Today she is an assistant professor in the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Polytechnic Instititue and State University. Brian Anderson Brian Anderson’s itch for farming took him from Polo, Mo. to the University of Missouri and a degree in agricultural economics. His post-college experience in the seed industry led him to the halls of MFA Incorporated where, as a production and marketing specialist, he helped build the MorSoy soybean line into a marketplace success. Anderson is now the manager of Mid-States Seed in Marshall, Missouri. Jeannie Bentley Jeannie Bentley used her degree in a life-long commitment tothose around her. She grew up in Marceline, Mo., and after graduating with a degree in physical education from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State), Bentley immersed herself in raising her children and becoming involved in civic leadership in north central Missouri. Now she is director of advancement for Boys &amp; Girls Town of Missouri, an organization with a mission to improve the lives of children with emotional and behavioral problems through family-focused services. The state’s rural suicide rate is growing faster than in urban counties, increasing 78% between 2003 and 2017.</p>\n<p>With a four-year grant commitment from the MFA Foundation, University of Missouri Extension will have new avenues to support rural communities in need of mental health assistance.</p>\n\n<p>“Most parts of rural Missouri don’t have access to mental health providers and services to meet the need,” said Karen Funkenbusch, an MU Extension health and safety specialist and director of the <a href=\"https://extension.missouri.edu/programs/agrability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Missouri AgrAbility project</a>. “The MFA Foundation’s substantial four-year commitment will allow the expansion of teletherapy sessions and increased educational awareness in more rural communities. This generous gift will assist in the creation of more resources and the development of a statewide mental health awareness campaign targeting one of Missouri’s most vulnerable populations.”</p>\n<p>MU Extension addresses the challenge through resources shared by trained extension specialists. With backgrounds in both agriculture and mental health, these specialists have a deep understanding of the pressures that farmers and ranchers face, such as rising fertilizer and fuel costs, challenging weather, poor harvests and struggles with debt.</p>\n<p>“The lack of mental health support in Missouri’s rural areas is an ongoing challenge,” said Jon Ihler, president and CEO of MFA Oil. “It has been difficult to address for multiple reasons, from cultural to financial, but there is a clear need for better access. The MFA Foundation recognizes that need and hopes our contribution can help fulfill it.”</p>\n<p>One such resource is the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance program, which provides mental health resources and telehealth counseling sessions. Since 2020, the program—broadly known as Show-Me Strong Farm Families—has served more than 2,000 farm community members in all 114 Missouri counties. The MFA Foundation scholarships are intended to help students pursue studies and develop careers that enhance the future of rural America. These scholarships are offered to high school seniors who are children or grandchildren (including step-children or step-grandchildren) of member-level customers of MFA Agri Services Centers, MFA Oil Company bulk plants or propane plants, or qualified customers of other MFA affiliate locations. The scholarships are $2,000 each and may be used at any college or university. We actively sponsor and participate in organizations such as 4-H and FFA along with other educational activities and programs, including Missouri Farmers Care’s Ag Education on the Move.
